With so many things to do, you may be stuck wondering where to go in KwaZulu-Natal. Unique and varied with a surprise around every corner, the province has long lured in thrill-seeking and nature and beach loving travellers. Known as South Africa’s ‘Garden Province,’ this evergreen destination boasts pretty towns, towering mountains and hair-pin roadways winding through quaint isiZulu villages. Aside from its shimmering coastline and postcard-perfect weather, KZN (as it’s called for short) boasts a rich history. When you’re finally willing to tear yourself away from the beach, you’ll find the most incredible battlefield sites further inland where assegais and shields once thrashed against the British Imperial forces.
With a province that offers so much, the question is, where to go in KwaZulu-Natal and what to do first? If you’re in the mood for mountains, make a beeline for the Drakensberg where hiking and horse riding always adds a touch of excitement. Khaki-clad travellers can get their nature fix by heading north towards the Elephant Coast where game parks, estuaries and marine reserves await. If sun and sea top your travel list, journey from Durban along the N2 towards the iconic South Coast where you’ll discover a treasure trove of glorious beaches like ‘Scotties’ (Scottburgh), Kelso, ‘Baggies’ (Warner Beach), and ‘Sheppie’ (Port Shepstone).
Set aside enough time to live like a true Durbanite. Don your slops, stretch your legs along The Golden Mile and try the legendary fiery bunny chow or a rickshaw ride in metropolitan Durban. Then head north or south to explore the Kwazulu-Natal coastline or head inland.
Travel into the lush Natal Midlands to explore its historic battlefields or go further into the majestic Drakensberg Mountains.
KwaZulu-Natal is an excellent province to navigate by car and we’d highly recommend renting one from the usual suspects like Avis and Europcar (if you’re not already exploring KZN on your own steam).
When it comes to the weather, KZN boasts a moderate coastal climate, with sizzling summers and warm winters (don’t forget to pack the mozzie spray!). There’s quite a bit of humidity in the air and a fair amount of rainfall in November, but the terrain is always green and well-nourished, making it incredibly easy on the eye.
