Take a Breather

We’ve just crept over the mid-year mark, but between our national elections and first-ever coalition government, there’s been a lot to process – especially with winter rolling in and ‘shrinkflation’ on the rise.

To tackle the second half of 2024 at full throttle, it’s important to take a break to refuel and recharge. It’s time for a short breather, and by that, we mean an affordable local holiday.

Want something good to look forward to? Here’s what we recommend:

Winter favourites

Yes, it's that time of the year when movie marathons and hot drinks are the order of the day. But just because it’s cold outside, doesn’t mean travel should be put on hold. Take advantage of off-peak rates, hop in the car and check yourself in at Little Switzerland Resort. It’s a fond favourite for those wanting to bundle up with loved ones near a fireplace and a great view – misty mountains! There’s more of that over at Stonehill River Lodge if you’re based in the Western Cape.

Longing to be near the beach? Take advantage of KwaZulu-Natal’s temperate winters at Zimbali Lodge near Ballito.

Meet the real GNU

This winter, go meet the real gnu, and by that, we’re not referring to our Government of National Unity. Gnu (pronounced “g-new” or simply “new”) is another name for a wildebeest, which can be spotted at our affordable safari destinations such as Mount Savannah Game Reserve near the Cradle of Humankind.

The thinning vegetation during South Africa’s colder months means better opportunities for animal sightings. If you're travelling between Joburg and Durban this winter, make a game-viewing pitstop at Tala Collection Game Reserve. Time your visit just right, and you might even experience a rhino dehorning with the Rave Rhino team.

Take a day trip

If you’re having to cut back on expenses and can’t quite take a holiday just yet, how about a day trip? We have multiple properties where you can tuck into a picnic, or light up the braai. Make a splash in the hot springs at Avalon Springs in Montagu or go grab a pizza by the ocean at the Blue Marlin All-Inclusive Seascape (launching spring 2024) in Scottburgh, KwaZulu-Natal.

In the grip of winter, the thought of braving the cold may make you want to stay bundled up at home. The one exception that might persuade you otherwise is a good meal. Based in the Western Cape? Take a day trip to Franschhoek for high tea at Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa.
