Crisp breeze, the rustle of leaves – autumn in here!
The old cliché of South Africa is that it’s perpetually hot and sunny. But we locals know better than that. The month of April heralds clear skies, cooler temperatures, and golden hues as autumn makes her arrival.
During this time of transition, nature paints a masterpiece with changing colours – a scene well worth leaving the house for. If you’re eagerly awaiting your next getaway, now is a great time with fewer crowds and falling holiday prices.
Take me to the mountains
If you love autumn for its nostalgic colour change - deep reds and browns, warm oranges and yellows - best to head to the mountains where you can sip your morning coffee or afternoon Chenin admiring the changing tapestry. For us, Franschhoek tops the list, as the vines shed their fruit and wine estates forgo their peak holiday prices. A safari in the savannah
During autumn, much of the country emerges from the summer rains. The skies clear and the foliage thins, which makes for improved wildlife viewing. Although you’re not yet likely to witness animals congregating at waterholes like in the winter months, you'll still catch the last of the migrating birds before they depart.
Settle in near the evening fire at Mount Savannah Game Reserve or make your way to Mjejane Bush Camp for an autumn safari near the Kruger.
But what about the beach?
Autumn in South Africa can vary depending on where you go. Generally, our coastal regions remain lush and pretty well into winter.
KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast is one example – characterised by blooming aloes which signal the impeding Sardine Run (between May and July). Take advantage of the warm Indian Ocean water at The Blue Marlin Hotel in Scottburgh or trek north to Ballito and check in at Zimbali Lodge. Keep an eye on the horizon for dolphins!
