Lock in that ‘Dezemba’ holiday

It may only be October, but we’re officially descending into December… or as we South Africans affectionately call it: ‘Dezemba’. But before you chuck the kids in the car and break out the braai tongs (clack-clack!), it’s important to lock in those holiday plans as early as possible.

Something tells us, it’s going to be a bumper of a season, so don’t leave it to the last minute. Here’s how to ensure a stress-free Festive Season:

Try self-catering

Following a slight drop off in petrol prices and inflation, all in all, it’s a good time to be living and holidaying in South Africa. The price of braaibroodjies is stabilising — according to Johann Biermann’s braaibroodjie index. If you needed more reason to light up the braai this Dezemba, there you go.

If you’re conscious about keeping costs as low as possible, don’t overlook self-catering accommodation. Fortunately we offer plenty of that with ample braai facilities! if you’re heading anywhere between Johannesburg or Pretoria and Mbombela (Nelspruit), Olifants River Lodge has everything you need on site with campsites, chalets, cabins and apartment options suited to all budgets.

Get in earlier

Mid-December to mid-January is South Africa's busiest holiday period. If you want to avoid the crowds and queues as much as possible, it’s wise to start earlier, before peak rush. An early start will also get you ahead of the Festive Season traffic as popular roads in regions like the Garden Route and the Kruger hit their pinnacle. Plan to arrive a little earlier at domestic airports well before check-in and ensure your vehicle is fit to drive ahead of time.

It’s also crucial to snap up your activities in advance. This includes everything from transfers, guided game drives and spa treatments, to wine tastings and Christmas lunches. If you’re holidaying in the Western Cape, Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa ticks the box for top-notch dining experiences this December.

Head further afield

The beach has long remained a top option for Dezemba holidaying. And although North Coast hideaways like Zimbali Lodge continue to make us swoon, the KwaZulu Natal South Coast offers a treasure trove of local spots with fewer crowds. If the ocean is calling your name, then the Blue Marlin All-Inclusive Seascape hits the sweet spot.

If you want to be in the bush during the Festive Season, consider locking in lesser-known wilderness reserves where you don’t have to jostle amongst other visitors to game view. Our local favourites include Mount Savannah Game Reserve near the Cradle of Humankind or Finfoot Lake Reserve (Elands River Game Reserve).

Booking as early as possible will make all the difference between a happy holiday and a stressful and more expensive one. Don’t leave it to the last minute. Our team is here to help you lock in your plans: reservations@dreamresorts.co.za / 0861 010 347
