Whisk the Fam Away this Easter
Whether you celebrate Easter or simply enjoy the long weekend that comes with it, there's one common theme connected to this local holiday – and that's family.
With Good Friday on April 7th and Family Day on Monday the 10th, there's no better time to whisk the whole brood away on a local adventure.
Still trying to figure out where to go? Here's what tops our travel list:
Scottburgh, KwaZulu-Natal
With shark nets in place and lifeguards on duty, Scottburgh promises safe swimming for the whole family this April. There's also a bounty of fish-filled rock pools to explore and a well-stocked shop on-site to top up on ice cream. This underrated holiday destination is just an hour's drive from Durban and ticks all the right boxes for an affordable escape along the coast.
Where to stay? The Blue Marlin Hotel
Zimbali, KwaZulu-Natal
Being slightly more built up than the South Coast, the North Coast of KZN promises an action-packed holiday experience this Easter. Although Ballito and Salt Rock are popular haunts, we suggest driving through to the hidden gem of the Dolphin Cost – Zimbali. This eco-estate offers everything you could want and need, with jaw-dropping views over the Indian Ocean.

Olifants River, Mpumalanga
If you're based close to Johannesburg or Pretoria, make a beeline for the Olifants River on the R555. Often overlooked, this hidden highveld gem is just the spot to light up the braai and cast a line with loved ones (bluegill sunfish, bass, and carp swim in these waters). There's no better place to beat the crowds this April and enjoy a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of the world.

Northern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal
South Africa's Drakensberg region is the perfect place to let the little ones stretch their legs in the fresh mountain air. There are trails to hike, horses to ride and plenty of dams, rivers, and resort pools to make a splash in. Family-friendly restaurants prove an easy find, with interesting local padstals waiting to capture your imagination. Should you want to spend time together, without screens and gadgets for the April long weekend, don't overlook a stay in the Berg.
Where to stay? Little Switzerland Resort
Swellendam, Western Cape
It's tough to beat a family holiday along the Garden Route, especially when it comes to a local town like Swellendam. Aside from numerous craft beer and coffee spots to satisfy moms and dads, there's more than enough to entertain the kiddies. From the Sulina Faerie Sanctuary and Bontebok National Park to the Bukkenberg pottery studio, the hardest part is fitting it all into the itinerary!
Where to stay? Stonehill River Lodge
Finfoot Lake Reserve, North West
Finfoot Lake Reserve ticks all the right boxes for families from Pretoria or Johannesburg looking to venture into the bush. Located just a stone's throw from the Pilanesburg Game Reserve, there are ample braai facilities, a swimming pool and games room on site. Not to mention, two additional activities included in the rate. Choose from Segway tours, guided bush walks, 4x4 game drives, barge cruises and canoeing trips.
